Kowhai Pattern Collection:

My inspiration for this work was a fragment of “willow pattern" pottery I found on a beach.

I have replaced the main features of the Willow Pattern with symbols of NewZealand: The willow tree with a kowhai tree, the boat with a waka, the two birds are Tui's, the temple is replaced with a settlers cottage and the fence is of course a picket fence.

I have then taken these elements to create jewellery celebrating NZ. Each piece of jewellery depicts a scene or an element from the “Kowhai pattern.”

Land Ahoy!

Land Ahoy! is based on my experience of some magical but challenging days sailing off the coast of New Zealand.

I felt a timeless connection to the historical journeys made by the first Wakas to arrive in New Zealand; and the first ships from Europe.

This work is about that journey. The experience of being at sea and the magic that entails: dolphins swimming in phosphorescence; albatross gracefully gliding ahead; whales' spray in the distance; the stars above to navigate by.

It is also about the uplifting moment of seeing the land again, to see Aotearoa the 'long white cloud' from the sea: a feeling of relief and celebration; a feeling of belonging.

Retro:

Browsing through a book of 1950's design, I found I was very drawn to certain shapes and images.

I have taken these shapes and developed them into pieces of jewellery.

I have enjoyed mixing and matching classic 50's patterns to create unique pieces of jewellery.
